In Washington, the House and Senate approved more war funding and debated troop withdrawal. We are disappointed that so many in Congress are unwilling to acknowledge the need for U.S. troop withdrawal, or to require that forces begin withdrawing, with or without a timetable. Three years of war and occupation have failed to bring stability, freedom or sovereignty to Iraq. Instead, they have brought violence, poverty and despair. U.S. policy needs to support Iraqi civil society to rebuild Iraq and support civil society and political, not military, solutions to the conflict. While Congress has not reflected the views of the U.S. pro-peace majority, the public debate on television, radio, newspapers, and the internet shows that many see our views as common sense. In the past few months, more and more people have been talking publicly about how political, not military, solutions will get Iraq out of crisis. Even military personel such as George Casey, the U.S. Army general in command of coalition troops in Iraq, are acknowledging the need to withdraw from Iraq. It's clear that we’re winning over public opinion and, with continued pressure, we will end this war. You can follow what's happened in Congress by visiting Friends Committee on National Legislation’s online updates. In the Middle East, a debate about the future of the region is going on within Iraq and with Iraq’s neighbors. Coming summits and meetings will present opportunities for Iraqis to speak on the international stage and negotiate a peaceful and secure resolution. We will continue monitoring the diplomatic and political situation in the region. Stay tuned. In the meantime, I want to make sure that you know about AFSC’s resources that are at your disposal. Dreams and Nightmares is a traveling memorial to Iraqis who have lost their lives in the war and occupation. With photographs, names and personal stories, it conveys the unseen side of the war in Iraq — the tragedy being experienced by everyday Iraqis. On the web site, you can explore the exhibit in 360° virtual reality and hear some comments from Raed Jarrar, an Iraqi who spoke at the unveiling in Washington, DC, over Mothers Day Weekend. View the memorial online. This weekend, July 1-4, the exhibit will be displayed on Philadelphia’s Independence Mall to coincide with the Fourth of July activities. For directions to Dreams and Nightmares and a schedule, please visit http://afsc.org/eyes/experience-ewo.htm. Finally, many of you have expressed the desire for more resources for your community and faith groups. You can find many of them in the right column of this email. I hope these are helpful. If you have other needs or ideas, please let me know. Thanks for your work for peace and for your support.
